Every now and then, I notice my ashtray in my car gets filled with coins. It’s the one spot I put all my loose coins from when I go out to lunch or buy something at the store. Also my wife and I find coins lying around the house, which we place in one bag easy to find.
Every few weeks, we’ll take the bag of coins down to the local supermarket, and deposit them into the Coinstar machine. If you are unfamiliar with Coinstar (there are other companies who do the same thing), it’s basically a kiosk that allows you to dump your misc. coins into a tray, which will then correctly determine how much money you have given it. From there, a printed receipt is given to you, which you can receive money back from the market cashier. Usually the machine takes a fee of approx. .09 cents per dollar.
We’ve done it a few times, to find out that we had something like $25 or money sitting around. Since we were at the supermarket, we ended up paying for a few days worth of groceries or household items for the “loose change.”
