Checking your Credit Score - FREE Offer

March 15th, 2010 by Marc

credit-150x150When i was younger, I never realized how important your credit score would be later in life.  When I first tried to lease a car, I got denied because my credit score was in the low 600’s.  Right then and there, I knew that I needed to build up my score if I ever wanted to buy a car or home again.  Much less get a credit card with a lower interest rate.  Over the years, my score has gone to as high as 790, and down to 620.  I made sure that I always knew what was occurring on the report — if there were late payment reports, old credit cards with the balance paid off or any suspicious activity.  Your credit report is possibly one of the most important things to have.  It’s also important to make sure you know what is going on with all 3 credit agencies reports, which most lenders review before giving you any type of loan or credit.  So as a special offer to my readers on this site, I am giving you the opportunity to have a 7-day FREE trial of 3 Bureau Credit Monitoring plus Credit Report & Score .  I used this to test it out, and thought it worked out great.  Also one myth I constantly hear, “Does checking your own credit report affect your score?” … NO, it doesn’t.  Tell me how it works for you?

Surviving The Holidays

December 27th, 2009 by Marc
Respond

christmasshopping-main_fullThis year’s holiday season was a challenging one for us.  Although both my wife and I finally have steady jobs and incomes again, it was 40% less than what we were making a few years before.  The pinch of less income comes around holiday time, as we start to worry about year end bills and taxes.  In addition the need to purchase presents for all of our family, nieces and nephews.  This year we decided to make a budget and buy wisely.  We utilized the internet looking for discounted prices on eBay, Craigslist, online retailers like Zappos and companies that give back like Toms Shoes.  In the end, we made it through by giving everyone wonderful gifts without breaking our checking account.  This was also an opportunity for us to re-evaluate our insurance policies and checking needs to see where we can cut back a few dollars.  Our next post will be about ways to to make this happen.

Being Unemployed, New Role

March 12th, 2009 by Marc
Respond

manathomedeskOver the past month, I am happy to say my wife took a job with a great company.  Her responsibilities are just as demanding as her previous job, she has to commute an hour to the workplace and it’s 20% less than her previous salary.  But during these times, we are thankful for this opportunity.  As for me, I am going into the 3rd month of being unemployed (or as a friend said “Early Retirement”).  I’ve been in the position before, but it’s always difficult to come to terms that once again, you need to look for work.  Over the past months, my daily habits and behavior have changed — sometimes I’m productive and other times I’m just plain lazy.  I can tell this has an effect on my relationship as it causes tension when she gets home each night from a long day of work & traffic.  I just recently read this article in Newsweek where it describes the challenge of being laid off has on the man’s role within his household.  It’s great read and was so helpful in understanding the patterns I was going through.  Now I will make an effort to “reverse” these underlying behaviors.

Create Dream Backyard for (Almost) Free

March 9th, 2009 by Marc
Respond

landscaping-fire-pit-and-backyardWhen we moved into our new home, the one thing sticking out like a sore thumb was the backyard.  The previous tenant decided not to do up kept on the yard, thus it over grew with weeds. On top of that, the landlord did construction on the house, and his workers dumped the leftover waste in the yard.  So here we are on moving day, looking at basically a “Garbage Dump” of a backyard.  After a few sighs, we looked at this mound of rumble as an opportunity to create our “Dream Yard”, the kind we always saw in Dwell Magazine.

To do it, we knew it would take hard work, limited budget (we were renting!), and lots of creativity.  So we created a plan …

  1. Measure & create a “blueprint” of your backyard – this help us determine the size and gave us an idea where to place items (i.e. flowers, bricks)
  2. Look at Magazines & Websites for ideas – Dwell .com was our inspiration
  3. Research out how much items will cost  & create a budget on what you want to spend
  4. Find FREE items on Craigslist and other websites
  5. START WORKING  & MAKE IT WHAT YOU WANT

I’ll post photos of our backyard later this week.  It’s almost done & under budget.

5 Inexpensive Ways to Enjoy Valentine’s Day

February 13th, 2009 by Marc
Respond

opt-valentines-day-candy-hYes, I know Valentine’s Day is this weekend (strange that it’s right after Friday the 13th this year??).  There are times I think of this day as made up by the marketing department at Hallmark.  But it means a lot to my wife, and to everyone else in the world.

This year, my friends and I were coming up with ideas to celebrate this day by showing our love, without bankrupting our checking accounts.

1)    ENJOY OUTDOORS – go take your partner on a hike to some place beautiful.  Could be the beach, a meadow or the top of a mountain that oversees the town.  Bring along a backpack with snacks, and maybe a small bottle of champagne & cups.  That’s what I did when I proposed to my wife (3 years this weekend!). Guess it worked!

2)    COOK A SPECIAL MEAL – it seems like every restaurant has a “V-Day Dinner” that is SO OVER-PRICED just for that one day.  So why not turn your home into that exclusive restaurant you always wanted to try.  Create atmosphere with candles, lit fireplace, dim lights and an area to get cozy.  Get Creative!  Then create a meal that you will both enjoy.  If you don’t have culinary skills – go to your local specialty supermarket to purchase a full or a la Carte meal premade.

3)    SPEND ALL DAY WITH THEM – For us guys, it’s sometimes tough to be around our loved one all day long.  We have chores to do or sporting events to watch.  But for one day, turn all that off and focus on them.  Hey you might find out something new about them that you never saw all those years.  If you have kids, make them apart of it too as they are the ones you love also!

4)    EXTEND V-DAY TO ALL WEEK – Who says you, can only celebrate love on 1 day a year.  Why not make the whole weekend or week a V-Day Celebration.  Do something each day that shows your love to them.  A note left on the pillow at night. Heart shaped cookies (sugar & fat-free of course!) wrapped in the fridge. A text msg saying you love them. A photo of a special day you both had placed in a nice frame. You don’t have to go overboard, but just do little things each day to show you’re how much you care for them.

5)    HAVE FUN – Go out and relive the day you both met.  Could have been at a bar, a concert or maybe on a blind date?  Go out, and for giggles, re-enact the day you met.  I bet each of you have your own version of what occurred on that day….

Go have a great Valentines’ Day.  Would love to hear what you ended up doing.  I’ll enjoy mine with my lovely wife!

eBay Saved Us Financially

February 9th, 2009 by Marc
Respond

ebay-store-wdA few years ago, when I was laid off from a previous employer, I was looking for ways to raise cash for our family.  After reading numerous blogs & websites, I decided to start an eBay business with items we had around the house.  After cleaning out our closets, I found we had over 700 items we could sell!  The hardest task was 1) were these items any value to anyone, 2) what to price them at, 3) getting photos & descriptions for each item.  After using a number of free eBay web-base tools, we got our Store up & running.  At first my wife thought it was a waste of time, and suggested I donate all the items to charity.  But once sales started rolling in, she jumped on the bandwagon.  Everyday, she would ask, “Did we sell anything last night???” in anticipation for some great news.  Now each day, I look forward to processing our sales, printing out labels & packing slips, finding the item in our “eBay Shed”, and then walking down to the post office to ship it out.  After a little trial & error, I got the process and the pricing down to a science so we are making approx. 85 – 110% profit on each item.  And the extra income is helping us in so many ways.  If you want more details about how we run our store, feel free to email us

Great Online Tool to Control Your Money

February 8th, 2009 by Marc
Respond

mint_whiteMy wife and I over the years have used a number of different software programs to balance our checkbooks.  Quicken, QuickBooks and a number of other financial programs have done the trick.  However, we always felt it was difficult to truly know how much money we had, for example, when we were out for dinner or about to purchase items for the home.  Then recently, one of our friends suggested we look at this great website that helps you get a clear picture of your money.  Mint.com is touted as “the Best FREE Way to Manage Your Money”.  At first I was very skeptical, as this site basically has access to all of your personal banking, investment and credit card accounts, then gives you a dashboard of where you are spending and if you are within your budget.  However, as I started to research it more, and saw the secure features, it became more and more apparent that this is an amazing tool to have.  The other amazing parts about it is the way it suggests lower interest rate credit cards & banks accounts to help you lower your debt faster.  Plus, of course it can notify you either by email or by iPhone about your current spending and charges posted on the account.  Mint.com has become a major asset in helping us get control of our current situation…check it out!

Cut Cable, Watch TV on Web

February 6th, 2009 by Marc
Respond

laptopuser_959_18321922_0_0_4000799_300One of the first things we did was review our monthly budget. The first thing glaring out at us was the monthly cable bill, something like $70+. After doing some research, we realized that most of our favorite shows like LOST, 24, Saturday Night Live and others were replayed on websites in HD …which was better than our current TV. So we ditch cable, kept our internet & sold the TV. We now watch our favorite shows in bed on the laptop, or on a bigger computer monitor. So of our favorite websites to watch shows are Hulu, NBC.com, Joost, and Veoh.  Almost all the major networks are now showing their top shows on the site, with limited commercials & in HD full screen.  You can even watch full-length movies, the News and sporting events on some of these sites.
